Rokiskis St. Matthew Evangelist church

     Rokiškis

Ensemble of Rokiskis church is one of the most original and impressive monuments of neo-Gothic’s in Lithuania. Rokiskis counts Reinoldas Tyzenhauzas (1830-1880) and Marija Tyzenhauzaite – Psezdzieckiene (Przezdziecka) (1827-1890) were the founders of the church. Architectural project of the church was prepared by Friedrich Gustav von Schacht from Prussia in 1866, Max Paul Bertschy from Liepaja and Johann Daniel Felsko from Riga attached it. In the second stage of erection Georg Werner from Matria (Tyrol, Austria) created interior of the church, designed belfry, chapel and fence of churchyard. Wooden church equipment was manufactured in Joseph’s and Ludovik’s Goyers manufacture was brought in 1882 from Belgium: pulpit, 6 confessionals, stallum, presbytery fence, doors, seats, organ board, 14 figures of saints. J. and L. Goyers also made baldachin of central altar and side altars under drawings of the architect G. Werner. They have some differences in their composition. All works are unified with a material (natural oak) and professional whittling manner that is also very diligent. Goyers probably made stations also. The church was consecrated in 1885 m. Interior of the church is indefectible from view of professionalism.  This is probably the only interior of XIX c. in Lithuania where everything was designed and made by high qualified foreign architects, painters and masters.
